In November 2018, MOVTOUR made its presence felt at the

Screen Studies Association of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Conference (SSAAANZ) at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia with the presentation:

Title: An Education: experiencing non-Hollywood cinematic grammars while looking into tourism motivation mechanisms.

Abstract

In One Summer Bill Bryson marks 1927 as the year that saw the United States rise to world prominence and dominance in almost every field. As far as the entertainment industry is concerned, Bryson considers the emergence of sound films to be a determining factor in the fast expansion of American culture and perspective on a global scale. Moreover, the recent appearance of streaming services such as Netflix, hulu or HBO has also strengthened Hollywood patterns of imagination, thus leading the public to neglect alternative cinematic insights. With this in mind, this paper aims at describing the outcome of an accidental experiment conducted with Tourism students of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (Portugal), in partnership with Tomar’s Film Society, in which they were exposed to different film approaches to the theme of the journey. Although that was not the initial goal of the research project, the resulting feedback allowed us to draw conclusions regarding the effects of a sole form of imagination supremacy in younger generations. In addition, it also provided clues for developing means to challenge its apparent irreversibility while exploring other aesthetic imaginations.

This presentation was put together and presented by the MOVTOUR researcher Hermínia Sol, the Principal Investigator of Activities 2 and 3 - Journeying the Screen I & II.
